General Information
The Carlton to Matcham Road project involved the widening of the Central Coast Highway (HW30) at the Serpentine Road intersection. Located in Erina Heights the aim of the project was to reduce traffic congestion, increase safety to motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and to improve access for public transport.
The project required the design and construction of a 10m high Reinforced Earth™ panel wall to the north of the existing retaining wall (Terramid® segmental Reinforced Earth™ wall), which retains a fill embankment up to 8m high. The project also included substantial ground stabilization, stormwater drainage and subsurface drainage systems, crash barrier and environmental controls.
The system adopted was the RECO TerraPlus® precast concrete facing panel system with a vertical architectural ribbed finish. Key aspects of the design needed to allow for: interaction/global instability with associated existing poor ground conditions and subsequent batter toe slopes; proposed crash barriers and horizontal loadings to be located at the top of the wall; seismic affects; associated drainage pits and services – more specifically the top layers of soil reinforcement needed to be draped down @ 4:1 to avoid these services.

Retaining Solutions scope of works involved poor subgrade excavation and replacement and the installation of: concrete footings; architectural ribbed finish panels; REHas soil reinforcement; gravel encapsulated drains and Megaflow drainage system; cement stabilised medium to foundation treatment and underside of crash barrier parapets in addition to surveyor conformance +/- 10mm; spreading and compaction of imported select backfill “Hansen Quarry Dust” which was used within the reinforced fill and general fill zones, partial demolition of existing Terramid® wall to allow for future pavement widening.
The wall construction was completed ahead of schedule due to the close working relationship between Retaining Solutions, RTA Hunter Road Services, Douglas Partners and Hanson quarries.
